Steph + Brandyn at Lingrow Farms | Pittsburgh Wedding Photographer
 @Jill Gearhart Photography | www.jillgearhartphotography.com

Lingrow Farms is the perfect venue for an easy and romantic wedding day! With a charming farmhouse to get ready in, its gorgeous gazebo for your ceremony, and a romantically lit barn for your reception, it’s an easy choice to have a stress free day with a luxury feel. The only thing “rustic” about this lovely location is the actual barn, and the surrounding property offers plenty of amazing portrait spots. I was pretty excited when I found out that there was a row boat, and luckily, these two were happy to indulge my need for creative portraits and climb in!

The staff at Lingrow is truly what sets them apart - when the ceremony was over and we were done with family portraits, the staff delivered appetizers and drinks to the entire bridal party during pictures, right where we were! Then, the staff helped me get Steph and Brandyn into and out of the rowboat. Later during the reception, not only were the vendors served the same delicious food as everyone else, but we were permitted to go through the line first! We even had our own private table downstairs, and the DJ’s had a pitcher of ice water at their table in the loft (which, was accessible with safe, normal stairs - no scary ladders!)

It was helpful that the service was perfect, because Steph and Brandyn deserved nothing but the best on their day. These two met when they attended college at IUP and actually had a long distance relationship for two years before being able to be together in Indiana. Their adorable pup Moe lives happily with them, and you can often see him working out with his mom Steph in her instagram stories! In fact, both Steph and Brandyn work in the physical fitness industry, and though they are beautiful on the outside, they are just as lovely on the inside. Steph and I have grown close over the last year, sharing life stories and encouraging each other several times a week. It’s been exciting for me to see every piece of this wedding come together just as she dreamed, and I couldn’t be happier for the both of them!

Why Styled Shoots are Important For Your Wedding | Winter Wedding Styled Shoot at The Barn at Rayne Run, Marion Center PA
 @Jill Gearhart Photography | www.jillgearhartphotography.com

When planning your wedding, do you rely on your friends recommendations, a google search, local magazines, or maybe bridal shows to find the best vendors? How can you be really sure that you are getting the best of the best, while still getting a good price for your area? It's become more and more popular for photographers and other local vendors to participate in "styled shoots", that is, a fake wedding that pulls together the best local wedding vendors to show off their services in as "real" of a setting you can get!

Styled shoots are great for you to look out for and pay attention to because it literally shows you a "trial run" of all the best, hand selected vendors in your area. Who better to pick a team of super services that those that are in constant community with each other in the wedding industry? As wedding professionals, we have worked with nearly every local vendor there is and can recommend the best to you through our styled shoots - because we picked them ourselves! For the guys reading this - think of it like your fantasy football draft of all the best wedding vendors in town, and they are facing off to show you their stuff!

The idea is that local vendors all come together in collaboration, donating time and services, to show you, the bride to be, the best of what they can do or offer. It's better than a recommendation, search engine session, perusing a magazine, or waltzing around a bridal show because you can see exactly what your wedding would be like if you were to hire them.

My great friend Jackie and I have been planning this styled shoot for months! We were over-the-moon excited when vendors one by one gave enthusiastic "yes!"s to help us pull off an unforgettable day! Be sure to check out the local vendors, hand selected by us for their excellent services, for your wedding, and be sure to like them on facebook and give them a follow on Instagram!

Planning Your Wedding Around a Holiday | New Years Eve Wedding at Renshaw Farms, Freeport, PA
 @Jill Gearhart Photography | www.jillgearhartphotography.com

Are you considering having your wedding on or around a holiday? As if weddings aren't overwhelming enough, let's throw the craziness and busyness of the holidays into the mix! But, there can be some great benefits to hosting your friends and family around such iconic times. Whether it's New Year's Eve like Casey and Jon, or a Labor Day wedding, Halloween wedding, Valentine's Wedding - whatever - there are lots of great reasons to take on the added logistics of a holiday wedding.

FAMILY

One of the obvious benefits of a holiday wedding is that it's likely that family will be in town. If having those that you love close for your wedding is important to you, this is a big win. I've photographed a lot of weddings around Labor Day or Memorial Day, which is really smart in my opinion because most people have off the following Monday - which means an extra day to recover from all the shenanigans! Be sure to book flights and blocks of hotel rooms well in advance, however, because a lot of people will be traveling and staying during these times of the year.

Traditions

As you grow old and gray together, think of how special your anniversary will be enveloped in the special traditions you normally do around the holiday. While still enjoying all of your normal traditions, it will be that much sweeter to mix celebrating your love in with it!  It's likely that family will be close by for the holidays anyway, and how special will it be to reminisce with everyone about how magical your wedding day was?! Plus, the big perk - your husband probably won't forget your anniversary!

decor

A really fun part of a holiday wedding is the decorations! If you are unsure how or what to decorate with, most holidays come with "usual", iconic things that people can immediately identify with. This also allows you to have some fun and go a bit non-traditional from the normal flowers and candles, incorporating anything that is special to you from pumpkins to pine cones. You can even extend this idea into the type of dress you and your guests wear!

take it from the bride

What does Casey, the lovely bride featured here, have to say about having a NYE wedding?

"Do it!! It’s a really crazy time of year and I remember saying to myself on Christmas Eve, “who said it was a good idea to get married the week after Christmas?” But in all honesty, if I could do it all over again, I’d pick New Year’s Eve every time. Jon and I picked that day for a couple of reasons, first of all we never have anything fun to do on NYE so it seemed fitting that we would just throw the party this year. The second reason is that NYE is the first time Jon realized I existed when he saw a picture of me on Facebook that his cousin (and my best friend Rachel) posted of us, so again, it all seemed fitting.

For us, the actual wedding was all about getting family and friends together to celebrate and getting married on a holiday is the absolute perfect time to do it! I don’t think it even matters what holiday it is, just the fact that you were all going to get together anyways but now it makes it extra special!

As far as advice to those brides who want to get married on or around a holiday: have fun with it! You picked that holiday on purpose, so party it up! We incorporated NYE with putting out hats and noise makers our around 10:30pm that way they weren’t in all the wedding pictures but we wanted it to be a wedding/NYE party. I think it took the stress away from “the perfect wedding” knowing that it was also a party to bring in the new year. When I did start to get a little stressed, I just kept telling myself, it’s just a New Year’s party and I already have my outfit picked out so I’m ahead of the game! "

"The biggest thing to remember is the wedding is just about celebrating the day

and the marriage is about celebrating for a lifetime."

Ryan + Tabetha | Police Officer Barn Wedding at Fairman Family Farms, Shelocta PA

Ryan, the police officer, and his gorgeous bride Tabetha got married at the pastoral and serene Fairman Family Farms in Shelocta this past weekend with their baby girl by their side. This was definitely a memorable wedding, for many reasons. One being the major wipe-out I had mid ceremony. Chalk it up to my namesake, Jill, from the children's nursery rhyme - there was a hill, there was a Jill, (there was even a Jack!), and there was definitely a tumble! Pictured here is the mark I left in the hillside as I went backwards on my butt SECONDS before the kiss, in plain view of every guest. No broken crowns, or even cameras, for this Jill, though! Mud-covered was definitely not the most favorable fashion choice for the remainder of the wedding, but as they say, "the show must go on!"

A fun bridal party soon helped me forget my muddy-woes. By far one of the most fun groups I ever got to work with - so laid back and just happy to be there. Every casual and candid pose I requested of them they nailed effortlessly! Ryan's police officer friends kept us laughing the whole evening, with the most impressive rendition of Gangham Style I've ever seen. Who knew the guys in blue could boogie down like that?

POLICE OFFICER WEDDING DETAILS

From their custom cake topper to the "blue line" style wedding band, Ryan and Tabetha honored the important title of "officer" with every detail of their big day. One of his buddies even brought handcuffs that we were sure to grab some photos with! It was so rewarding to work with a couple that had so many creative ideas for their photos, but yet gave me so much freedom to challenge myself too.

double exposure wedding photos

This is a "hallmark" I'm trying to establish and push myself creatively with. Each wedding, I try to do something new, something unfamiliar, and something fun, especially with light. This wedding I sought out to do a double exposure, a long exposure, and some other creative lighting options like silhouettes. While there is a way to do a double exposure in camera, I prefer to use photoshop and set a landscape shot behind a portrait of the bride and groom using an Overlay layer style, or whatever fits the image. If I've learned anything, it's that you must always keep learning, keep creating, keep experimenting, and I am so grateful for the Tennant's for allowing me to do that!

I hope you enjoy the highlights of their amazing day (if nothing else, I know you'll love the photos of their sweet baby girl!)

David + Nora | Navy and Sunflower Barn Wedding at La Ferme Rouge, Patton
bride with long hair half up half down hairstyle wearing a headband at La Ferme Rouge in Patton, PA

When thinking about my favorite wedding venues, La Ferme Rouge in Patton, PA is definitely at the top of my list! There's something about barn venues that's near and dear to my heart. Classy but rustic. Elegant and charming. I would love to photograph here again!

Nora and David were so fun and laid back and easy to work with. Their ceremony was equally serene and lovely, held outdoors in a grove of trees, an antique dresser doubling as an altar. The reception was just as magical - be sure to check out their "naked cake" made by Nora's sister! Bonus points if you like gobs (and know what that means, haha!)

I hope you enjoy some of my favorite shots of their special day!
